Wrightsville Beach

If you’re looking for the region’s beachy hot spot, Wrightsville Beach might just be your pick.

Wrightsville Beach didn’t become an upscale vacation destination by trying to be another Myrtle Beach. After all, it has been named one of the South’s Best Beaches. It’s relaxed coastal living feel mixed with a bit of southern charm and an air of exclusivity make this island town one of a kind. Its miles of pristine beach is perfect for sun bathing, kite flying, castle building and of course, endless water activities. In fact, the water here is beautiful; aqua green, like being in the Caribbean. And that means days tend to be filled with swimming, body boarding, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, boating, and surfing. That’s right: Wrightsville Beach is recognized as the birthplace of surfing in North Carolina!

What is Wrightsville like?

While there is boundless activity here, there’s also a peace that can be found on the northern and southern ends. So much peace, in fact, that there are bird sanctuaries in both locations.

Access to everything is one of Wrightsville’s claims to fame. It’s only about 25 minutes to historic downtown Wilmington and all the shopping and restaurants it offers. It’s just around the corner from Mayfaire Town Center and several other boutique-filled shopping centers. The craft beer boom certainly didn’t miss this area either – Wilmington was named one of “America’s Beeriest Beach Towns” and was listed among the top five places to experience a “beery, beachside getaway” by CraftBeer.com. Wrightsville’s cute, if not quaint, downtown also offers a vibrant nightlife to boot.

Wrightsville Beach is a mere 15 minutes from ILM – that’s Wilmington’s International Airport – as well as several airports for private jets.

Fun facts

Wrightsville beach was chartered in 1899. But it’s not just one beach. It is a collection of small barrier islands that run between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean.

Located in New Hanover County, Wrightsville beach is part of Wilmington’s metropolitan area. It is named for the Wright family who owned the land around that area.

The Great Fire of 1934 destroyed over 100 buildings on the north end of Wrightsville Beach, including the popular Oceanic Hotel. That particular fire did not harm the south end or Lumina, a famous and brightly lit dance hall in the early half of the 1900s. But you can learn what did happen if you go to the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History.

If you’re looking for a treasure hunt, head to the north side of Wrightsville and look for The Mailbox. You never know if someone has left you a love note…

Your Go-To Place

Because it’s so close to Wilmington and all the activities that surround this small city, Wrightsville Beach is often the go-to beach for those who want the beach but with much more to do beyond sand and surf.
