Wake up, sleepyhead! We know you’re on vacation, but setting your alarm clock in the morning can actually be a good thing. The old adage “the early bird gets the worm” rings true when visiting coastal North Carolina. The early morning hours offer activities and experiences that don’t happen at any other time. So, if you consider yourself a ‘morning person,’ you can finally be rewarded for your early start to the day.
It’s time to seize the day early with these morning-time activities.
Watch the sunrise
Seeing the beautiful glowing orange sun peak above the horizon is an experience guests can have every morning when staying at Sea Scape oceanfront vacation homes. The Atlantic coast gives visitors a front-row seat to the sun rising towards the east with unobstructed views over the Atlantic Ocean. Plan to wake up around 6am during the summer, but check online for daily sunrise times.
Other popular viewing locations are on the beach or Johnnie Mercer’s Pier in Wrightsville Beach (opens 6am).
Go surfing
Join the “dawn patrol” and catch some waves at first light! Wrightsville Beach is a top surfing destination and mornings are one of the best times to surf. This time of day has the best waves and fewer people in the water disrupting your session. Many of the local surf lessons also take place in the morning.
The ocean water is colder in the morning, so consider wearing a wetsuit.
Get the best spot on the beach
Coastal North Carolina is a go-to location for beach vacations. The beach is open year-round, but most visitors come during the summer months. If you’re visiting during the beach season, arriving early will secure the best spot to enjoy your beach day. Also, parking is easier to find!
Cooler temperatures for outdoor recreation
Daytime temperatures average in the 80s during the summer with lots of sun and humidity. Beat the heat by checking off outdoor recreation from your bucket list before the hottest time of the day arrives by noon. In the morning, you’ll see lots of people riding bikes or walking The Loop.
Best time to catch fish
Did you know that mornings are one of the best times of the day to go fishing? Fish swim closer to the surface in the morning when it’s cooler and swim deeper when the sun is at its peak.
Crystal Pier (Wrightsville Beach), Carolina Beach Pier, and Surf City Ocean Pier are a few of the iconic piers on the North Carolina coast. A morning fishing session leaves plenty of time to explore other local activities in the afternoon.
Early morning coffee run
For many people, the day doesn’t get started until after their first cup of coffee. Some of the best coffee shops start brewing in the morning and close by the early afternoon. So, the morning is your best opportunity to taste of the coast’s best coffee!
In Wrightsville Beach, try signature house blend coffee from The Workshop (closes at 2pm). You have until 12pm to get your hands on the Mermaid Magic from Happy Hippies Java Hut, made with a signature coffee potion by the ocean.
Shop seasonal outdoor markets
Seasonal markets are the perfect place to stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and locally made seasonings for your vacation rental. It’s a chance to mingle with the local vendors and even snag some free samples!
Most local markets pop up from late spring through early fall and open at 8am. Check out our guide for the best local markets on the North Carolina coast.
Participate in a beach yoga session
The refreshing morning air, quiet beaches, and stunning ocean views make beach yoga one of the essential morning activities on the NC coast. Unpack your yoga mat and head down to Wrightsville Beach or Carolina Beach to find locally hosted yoga sessions right in the sand! There’s even SUP yoga.
Spot whales off the coast
The North Carolina coast is one of the best places to spot whales on the East Coast. The barrier islands put you in close proximity during their migration paths from December to early March. The morning is the best time to see them when the waters are calm and they’re most active. No binoculars needed!
Bring your pet to the beach
Guests staying in our pet-friendly vacation rentals don’t have to leave their furry friends behind when heading to the beach. Most beaches in the area have strict pet policies during the day, but are a bit more relaxed in the morning.
Carolina Beach and Kure Beach allow pets on the beach before 9am between April 1 and September 30 (they’re permitted all hours during the off-season). Ocean Isle Beach allows dogs before 9am between Memorial Day and Labor Day. All pets must remain on a leash.
Note that pets are prohibited on the beach in Wrightsville Beach.
Check out of your vacation rental
One of the most important reasons to wake up early is for check-out. Guests staying in Sea Scape vacation rentals must check out by 10am. If you want to sleep in longer in the morning, make sure to organize your belongings the night before. Check-out is mandatory to allow time for property cleaning and preparation for the next guests checking in in the afternoon. Late check-outs may incur additional fees.
