Beach destinations are always popular for travelers seeking a bit of paradise on their vacation. In the midst of having fun, it’s important to remember that being a responsible traveler should always be a priority—especially when visiting the coast.
Responsible tourism is a growing travel trend, with visitors becoming more conscious of how they spend time in destinations. It’s about making a positive impact while creating fun travel memories.
As you get ready to visit popular coastal North Carolina destinations like Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach, here are ways you can be more responsible during your stay.
Understanding Responsible Tourism in Coastal North Carolina
What does it take to be a responsible tourist? Responsible tourism is a new outlook on the way we spend time in destinations. It emerged from the trend of sustainable travel. Sustainable tourism focuses on the long-term environmental, social, and economic impact from travelers. Responsible tourism is about specific, actionable steps individual travelers can take to contribute to the destination’s sustainability.
Three areas of focus for responsible tourism are:
- Supporting the local economies and communities
- Preserving the destination – nature and wildlife
- Make authentic connections
These are especially important when visiting North Carolina’s popular beach destinations. Preserving the natural ecosystem helps keep the coast in pristine condition and the beach towns visitor-friendly.
Ways to be a more responsible traveler
Responsible tourism looks different for every destination. Here’s how you can participate while visiting the NC coast:
Do leave your car behind
Our beach towns are very pedestrian-friendly. Exploring on foot is a great way to experience the coast with many popular attractions within walking distance. Biking is also common with newly established bike lanes and popular routes like The Loop and the River to Sea.
Paid parking is available on the street, but it fills up quickly, especially during the summer travel season. Filter our vacation rental homes with parking so you always have a convenient spot to drop your car off and explore the coast the right way!
Don’t bother the wildlife
You’ll likely encounter lots of wildlife if you plan to spend time on the beach. Whether relaxing on the shore or in the water, travelers should stay mindful of their distance and interactions with wildlife.
Sea Turtles are federally protected and it’s against the law to disturb them (there are fines!). If you’re snorkeling and diving, avoid stepping on coral. And if you’re lucky enough to spot a dolphin while out boating, let them swim gracefully.

Do enjoy catch-and-release fishing
Iconic piers line the NC coast and are a favorite attraction for our guests. They offer beautiful views and recreational fishing. It’s always fun joining the ranks of anglers to pick a spot on your favorite pier and chat with a neighbor about where you’re from and their best catch. There are many species of fish you can catch. A common practice is catch-and-release. Just be sure to snap a photo before unhooking it and tossing it back in the ocean.
Do leave the natural environment undisturbed
Coastal North Carolina has developed and undeveloped shorelines. Even in busy tourist areas like Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, visitors play a role in preserving the environment. Grassy sand dunes lining the coast look like the perfect photo-op, but trespassing on the dunes is prohibited and may incur a fine. These features actually help create a barrier protecting the mainland from large waves, flooding, and storms. Offshore barrier islands are easy to reach by boat and should be left unspoiled when you leave.
Don’t disturb the sound ecosystem
Multiple waterways snake their way through the mainland before flowing right into the ocean. It’s an excellent route for navigating your boat. Just be sure your boat doesn’t disturb nature or the many vacation homes lining the shore.
Sailboats, catamarans, and kayaks are perfect for exploring coastal NC. These are quiet options that let you cruise smoothly without interrupting the natural flow of nature or dockside homes. One benefit is being able to see marine life and wildlife as you sail by without startling them with loud boat motors.
Support local shops
Get ready to meet some friendly locals during your stay. Supporting local shops and restaurants stimulates the local economy and keeps our charming shops open. If you’re looking for dining or shopping, choose local eateries and boutique shops instead of big-box brands.
Do obey pet rules on the beach
Did you know that pets are allowed on the beach in North Carolina? Visitors with pets can also travel responsibly by abiding by local beach laws. Rules vary by beach, but in general, pets are allowed only during the off-season and must remain on a leash. These rules are in place to preserve a clean beach and avoid disturbing other beachgoers during peak hours.
