Do you know the telltale sign that the summer season has kicked off at North Carolina’s top beaches? Before experiencing busy beaches and crowded restaurants, it’s the local parking that will drive you crazy all season!
Parking is one of the biggest hassles for locals, who are used to the quieter off-season, and an inconvenience for visitors who prefer to maximize their time on the beach rather than hunt for parking. One solution is to stay in one of Sea Scape Properties’ oceanfront vacation homes, just steps from Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Surf City, to minimize your time in the car. But if you’re keen on exploring neighboring beaches, this summer parking guide will point you in the right direction to find an open space and start your beach day.
Parking regulations
Parking is very limited in Coastal North Carolina. For visitors with a vehicle, understanding local parking rules can help avoid unnecessary fines.
Paid parking in Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Surf City is enforced only from March 1 to October 31. If you’re visiting during the off-season, it’s free! However, for the busiest travel months, you can expect hourly fees or take advantage of discounted daily, weekly, or season passes to secure spots near the beach and street parking around town.
Pay attention to parking signs when arriving at the beach for rate details. In general, visitors can expect to pay between $5-6 per hour for street parking and $25 for a day pass. Local parking uses Pay-by-Plate Kiosk options for credit/debit cards and Text2Park. Cash meters are only at select locations, so make sure to bring other forms of payment before arriving.
Get full details on the latest visitor parking rates via the official city websites:
Note: Most parking rates apply only during specified times of day, typically from 9:00am until the evening. Confirm with the posted parking signs, as times vary by location and day.
Local beach parking made easy with PivotGO!
Parking at the beach just got a lot simpler! Pivot Parking, the main parking vendor at Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Surf City, launched PivotGO! to take the guesswork out of parking at three of North Carolina’s busiest beaches. And just in time for the peak travel season.
Visiting these neighboring beaches is easy. It’s less than 20 miles between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, and approximately 30 miles between Wrightsville Beach and Surf City. Even tourists staying in Wilmington, NC, have just a 10-15 minute drive from the city center to the coast. Driving is the best way to travel between locations, so PivotGO! gives travelers a preview of nearby parking before arriving.
It works by allowing drivers to select their preferred beach and see available parking spots. Since Pivot Parking is the main parking provider for the beach areas, it has up-to-date information about current parking demand based on recent transactions. Fewer transactions mean more available parking in a designated area. In addition, it provides information about hourly rates and navigation tools.
The PivotGO! website is free to use and can save valuable time on your vacation. So, no more driving around looking for parking and more time spent enjoying the beach.
Parking dos and don’ts at North Carolina’s beaches
Ask the locals and you’ll quickly find out that parking is heavily enforced in the local beach towns. With the influx of summer tourists and limited space, it’s important to ensure your vehicle is compliant. Returning to your car with a parking ticket can quickly ruin a fun beach day. Our goal is to help our visitors enjoy their vacation, so here are things to watch for if you have a vehicle.
- Review HOA rules. Sea Scape Properties manages accommodations within condominiums with strict HOA rules about parking. Guests are typically given access to one parking space per unit and additional vehicles must use paid public parking. Violating these rules can result in fines.
- Parking regulations also apply to golf carts and other motorized vehicles.
- Paid parking also applies to residential areas.
- Parking permits must be visible in your vehicle’s windshield or hang tag from the front mirror.
