Three Fun Ideas for a Carolina Beach Winter Vacation

Savvy travelers know that the best bang for your buck is to travel in the off season which is typically from Labor Day to Memorial Day. You can benefit from having less competition for the home you wish to rent, more flexibility in terms of check-in dates and length of stay, and often even a lower price. With fewer crowds comes easier access to dinner reservations, more opportunities for great photos (without photo-bombers in the back), and more peaceful beach walks. You might even meet some of the friendly locals who’ll give you tips about the hidden gems of the region.

If you are considering a Carolina Beach winter escape, you will benefit from all of the above and also have the opportunity to participate in some fun, invigorating and even educational activities that the region has to offers. Here are three very different options to enjoy:

Love the Ocean? Try the Polar Plunge!

Every year, Carolina Beach and Kure Beach host a Polar Plunge, along with a 5k race and 1 Mile Fun Run. A truly active celebration for all ages and skill levels, the $25 – $35 entry fees support Special Olympics athletes. Of course, you can choose to race only, plunge only, or combine the two for a real cool-down.

If you are not interested in participating in the run or plunge, you can still enjoy by watching all those who are supporting the athletes! Event organizers gather musicians in the Kure Beach Pavilion to keep you entertained, but then add food trucks to fill you up, a silent auction and raffle, a costume contest, and games for kids of all ages. A complete schedule of events can be found on the Kure Beach website.

The 2022 event is Saturday, February 19th, and runs from 11:00am to 3:30pm. For those of you who are participating in the run or the plunge, the organizers have requested that all entry registrations are completed online; the sign-up forms will stay active right up until the race starts.

Love to Dance? The East Coast Shag Classic’s for you!

Carolina Beach has hosted the East Coast Shag Classic for eleven years, and it has become one of the hottest tickets of the winter season.

What’s a Shag, you ask? Well, it is not what Austin Powers refers to in his movies.

The Carolina Shag dance originated in the African American community in the late 1930s. It became very popular across both North and South Carolina in the 1940s and became the official swing dance of the South as locals and vacationers alike fell in love with the music that accompanied the steps. While historians note that the term Carolina Shag was coined somewhere between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, NC, the popularity grew within the oceanfront dance pavilions that existed in the vacation home“>Grand Strand of SC and the Crystal Coast of North Carolina.

It’s a highly technical dance but easy to learn. It is defined by six counts and eight steps and always performed to what we call Beach Music. Whether it’s because of the complexity or the love of the music it is danced to, a whole new generation of people are captivated by the Carolina Shag.

Carolina Beach hosts the East Coast Classic in January each year, with the 2022 dates slated for January 27 – 30. While the event itself is sold out this year, you’re likely able to take in a host of folks doing the Carolina Shag just about every where you go that weekend. If you are interested in attending for 2023, check in with Hope Abounds Cancer Network, the organization that receives the proceeds of the tickets purchased.

History Buff? Fort Fisher’s Your Bet

If you are at all interested in the American Civil War, you owe it to yourself to celebrate the 2nd Battle of Fort Fisher. It’s an important site because the defeat of Fort Fisher, a Confederate fort from 1861 – 1865, helped seal the fate of the Confederacy.

If you are more interested in WWII, you’ll enjoy the Fort Fisher’s celebration of the 80th anniversary of the anti-aircraft training that occurred here.

If you simply enjoy wandering among a beautiful and historic beach front park, you really do owe it to yourself to head to Fort Fisher, which is just south of Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. There is always something happening at Fort Fisher that will intrigue and fascinate you, and winter is the best time to take it in. Fewer crowds and the opportunity to be there during the anniversary of so many happenings make this a great activity for January or February.

On Saturday, January 15th, 2022, you can attend the living history program called Wintering at Fort Fisher, a free day-long event that celebrates the 157th anniversary of the 2nd battle of Fort Fisher. The NC Historic location will offer the sights, sounds, and smells of 1865, with cannon firings held throughout the and Civil War troops training on the 12-pound Napoleon field gun.

Wintering at Fort Fisher

While not history, you’ll still enjoy a visit to the beautiful North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. It is open for you every day from 9am – 5pm and offers visual and hands-on experiences. Everyone enjoys the albino alligator, baby sea turtles, playful otters, and an up-close look at local fish. With COVID precautions in place, reservations are required because sellouts do happen. Book your tickets here. And be prepared to wear face masks while indoors.

Enjoy Mild Winter Temperatures

While we can’t promise perfect weather, we can tell you that at Carolina Beach and Kure Beach you are likely to find mild winters. January and February average around 60° F, which is lovely sweater weather for long beach walks – and perfect for hot tub sitting!
