Guide to Winter Surfing in Wrightsville Beach

We get asked all the time: can you surf in Wrightsville Beach during the winter? And we love exclaiming: “Yes!” Wrightsville Beach is a year-round destination—even for surfers! For some, it’s the best time of year for surfing in Wrightsville Beach because of the larger waves and fewer crowds. For others, it’s a new experience managing chilly waters and extra surf gear.

Many of our vacation rentals in Wrightsville Beach are just steps away from the beach. If you get the urge to catch a wave during your winter stay, this guide will give you everything you need to know to surf in the winter.

Why should you go surfing in the winter?

Surprise! Winter surfing at Wrightsville Beach is actually one of the best seasons for the sport. Once you get used to the colder water temperatures, you’ll start to realize all the advantages of getting out on the waves this season. Here are the top three reasons why winter is excellent for surfing in Wrightsville Beach:

  • Bigger swells
  • No crowded beaches
  • Warm weather

These perks help solidify Wrightsville Beach’s reputation as one of the ‘World’s 20 Best Surf Towns,’ named by National Geographic Magazine.

Bigger Swells

Waves flow consistently all year, but they’re larger during the winter months than in summer. Waves rolling into Wrightsville Beach are affected by Nor’easters, or coastal storms, occurring offshore. The early winter season is also affected by the Atlantic Hurricane Season. These contributing factors to the weather patterns create the perfect wave conditions for winter surfers.

No crowded beaches

Picture yourself riding the perfect wave only to be cut off by a group of swimmers in your path. That’s a common scenario during the busy summer season. However, winter is the off-season. Fewer people are on the beach and in the water—surfers, swimmers, boaters, etc. You have more room to ride the swell to shore.

Warm weather

Surfers love Wrightsville Beach for the warm coastal weather. Snowbirds flock here to escape cold northern winters. It’s not as far as California or Hawaii when you need a brief weekend surf break! The average highs during winter are in the 50s and lows in the 40s. With the right gear, you can enjoy surfing every day during your winter vacation.

Winter Water Conditions

Water temperatures are the main difference between winter and summer surfing. Prepare for the drop in water temperatures, and you’ll barely know the difference—especially after a few successful runs.

While the air temperature hovers around the 50s, the waters cool down to a range of 50-60°F from December to February. If you’re surfing during the morning, expect cooler air and water temperatures. Also, be aware of the windiness, which could affect temperatures and overall water conditions.

For up-to-date information on the surfing conditions, check out “Today’s Surf Report,” provided by WBLiveSurf. It has daily details of local temperature, wind, precipitation, swell size, and on-the-ground updates on the surfing conditions.

What to Wear

Having the right gear protects you and your surfboard from the elements when surfing during the winter. Since water temperatures are chilly, surfers need more than swim trunks or a bathing suit to endure the chill.

Wetsuits are recommended for winter surfing. A wetsuit with at least 4/3mm thickness will help keep you warm in and out of the water. It’s best with a hood or substitute with a detachable hood to keep your head warm. Consider adding booties, gloves, and other surfing accessories for additional warmth.

In addition to protecting yourself, you should also ensure your surfboard is prepared for winter action. Waxing your board before your surf session will provide more grip when surfing the larger swells.

Winter Surfing for All Levels

Enthusiasts of all skill levels can enjoy surfing during the winter in Wrightsville Beach. Even with bigger swells, the waves are relatively mild compared to the Outer Banks (OBX), San Diego, and other popular surfing destinations. It’s the perfect time of year to show off your skills or learn new ones.

Many of the wintertime surfers are experienced. The bigger winter swells give them a challenge boost, and they’re also used to colder water temperatures. Since fewer people are in the water these months, it’s an excellent opportunity to practice new techniques—even beginners can learn during the winter. Sean’s Surf Instruction holds private lessons year-round.

Things to know before surfing during the winter

Wrightsville Beach is excellent for surfing all year long, but surfing during the winter can be a different experience than in the summer. Here are a few things to remember before heading into the water for a surf.

  • Prepare for bigger waves. If you’re used to surfing during the summer at Wrightsville Beach, you should expect bigger swells.
  • No lifeguards are present. Lifeguards aren’t stationed at Wrightsville Beach during the off-season, so surf cautiously and never alone. Also, be sure to check the daily surf report for safe surfing conditions.
  • Fewer rental shops are open due to the off-season. You may have to purchase gear and accessories.
